Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard : Product Review

The Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard is a medium profile mouthpiece that attempts to provide high quality comfort and protection at a lower price point than some of Shock Doctor's other mouthguard products.  Featuring their patented Gel-Fit liner system and multi-material build, the product is advertised as an affordable but quality mouthguard for athletes of all types and sizes.  In this review, we take a look at how the Gel Max Mouthguard stacks up in comparison to its claims and its competitors.

Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard Design

The Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard boasts an exoskeletal shock frame which is less heavy duty than the Monocoque frame featured in their other products, but still provides a high level of protection.  The rubber chassis surrounds a softer base, which in turn surrounds an even softer inner gel lining.  The gel quickly and easily forms around the teeth when heat is applied.  The mouthguard's are available in multiple team colours, eleven in all, for added customisation.  It's also incredibly convenient for growing children given its universal fit, and can be purchased with or without a tether.  The tether can be easily attached to any cage or helmet designed for mixed martial arts or boxing.

The Gel Max mouthguard features Shock Doctor proprietary Gel-Fit system for a custom impression.  The moulding process is rather simple, as the gel is made pliable by heat.  In other words, just fill a cup with boiling water and drop the mouthguard inside for approximately 90 seconds.  Afterward, remove the mouthguard and press it against your top teeth and molars, holding it in your mouth for about a minute.  What results is a custom fit that matches the alignment of your teeth.  The Shock Doctor Gel Max mouthguard will initially feel a bit a bulky up front, but your mouth should quickly become accustomed to the positioning and feel.

The exoskeletal shock frame is engineered to protect against impacts to the teeth, jaw, and most importantly, the brain.  The multi-layer construction features two exterior levels of shock absorbing protection around the softer gel interior.  The piece is a great starter mouthguard for young adults and children, while at the same time maximising the two things that matter most, protection and comfort.

The Shock Doctor Gel Max mouthguard is equipped with an integrated breathing channel that provides better respiration and as a result, better performance.  Many users have lauded the exoskeletal shock frame, which not only increases the stability of your bite but redirects shock to the more durable areas of your jaw.  You won't have to worry about your teeth, even after direct strikes and side impacts.

The incredibly affordable price of the Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard is its main selling point.  Cheap yet extremely effective, the mouthpiece is easy to form and easy to use.  While there are better mouthguards on the market, they typically cost up to three times the amount as the Shock Doctor Gel Max.  Definitely a great mouthpiece at a great value.

The bottom line is that the Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard is a great purchase for those looking for high quality protection, safety, performance and comfort but do not want to shell out a lot of money for a mouthpiece.  The Gel Max is affordable yet still comes with much of the patented technology and breakthrough design concepts that Shock Doctor is famous for.  A good buy at a great price.
